The Anthropic-developed Mythos artificial intelligence model has sparked concern within the financial system, shaking the cybersecurity sector after its advanced capabilities were revealed—capabilities that enable it to detect serious security vulnerabilities in code—raising fears that it could be used to breach sensitive security systems, including financial systems and banks, which puts cybersecurity companies before unprecedented challenges.
Although the company has not yet rolled the model out to the public, it has been subjected to testing with 11 of the world’s largest companies, including: Amazon, Apple, Broadcom, Nvidia, and Google. These trials have shown the scale of the model’s capabilities, further intensifying concerns about it.
What is the Mythos model?
Mythos is Anthropic’s latest and most powerful AI model, officially known as Claude Mythos Preview.
It is a “general-purpose” (General-purpose AI) model, distinguished by remarkable superiority in the fields of cybersecurity and programming, and representing a new generation of AI capable of working with near-independence.
What is the goal of developing it?
The Mythos model was not designed primarily for cybersecurity; instead, it was built to serve as an “automated researcher” in the field of artificial intelligence—an AI that helps develop better AI.
But these same capabilities make it a dual-use tool, or more simply (cyber weapon), that can be employed in both cyberattacks and cyber defenses.
Top capabilities of Mythos
1) Detecting security vulnerabilities (The most dangerous feature)
Capable of discovering thousands of (Zero-day vulnerabilities)
This includes operating systems, browsers, and digital infrastructure
Most dangerously, it does not only detect—they it can also suggest ways to exploit them (Exploits)
2) Significant programming superiority
Writes and analyzes code quickly and accurately, surpassing most humans
Carries out complex programming tasks in a short time compared with traditional methods
3) Advanced analysis and reasoning capabilities
Deep understanding of complex systems
The ability to link multiple vulnerabilities to create an integrated “hacking chain”
4) Working with near autonomy (Agentic AI)
Carries out multiple tasks without direct human intervention
Has demonstrated the ability to bypass some constraints to achieve specified goals
Why did it raise this concern?
The concerns suggest that the model could be used as a cyber weapon to carry out advanced attacks, which could pose a threat to global infrastructure, including banks, power grids, healthcare systems, and the internet.
This development puts cybersecurity companies under major pressure and raises questions about their ability to keep up with this type of threat.
This also reverberated through the global financial system, as concern increased about the possibility of using these capabilities in widespread attacks on financial institutions. As a result, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, together with Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell, summoned several top leaders of American banks to discuss the cyber risks associated with the Mythos model.
