March 5th is International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education. On that day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a speech, and UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric read out the speech at the daily briefing at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In the speech, Guterres warned that the current threat posed by nuclear weapons has reached its highest level in decades, and the world is on the “edge of a cliff.” Dujarric: Today is “International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education.” In his speech for this occasion, the Secretary-General stated that the threat from nuclear weapons has reached its highest level in decades. Global tensions are driving military spending to unprecedented heights. Small arms and light weapons continue to proliferate, and emerging technologies are making conflicts more deadly. The Secretary-General pointed out that it is now time to invest in peace frameworks rather than weapons of war. This means fulfilling disarmament obligations, rebuilding trust, and strengthening mechanisms and tools to prevent the proliferation, testing, and use of deadly weapons. (CCTV News)
