ME News Report, April 14 (UTC+8), American Express announced on Tuesday the launch of a developer toolkit for agent-based commerce, along with purchase protection for erroneous transactions generated by registered AI agents. This move signals that, as the AI era develops, this niche industry could expand rapidly. “So far, the number of press releases about agent-based commerce may be roughly equal to the actual transaction volume, but there’s no doubt it will happen,” said Luke Gebb (Head of Global Innovation and Executive Vice President at American Express) in an interview. “It will start with scenarios that clearly provide value to users.” American Express has committed to providing user protection for erroneous transactions made by AI agents registered through its system. Gebb believes the company has an advantage in this area because it has already established a mature dispute resolution mechanism for customer transactions. When asked about the costs of providing safeguards for AI errors, Gebb stated that over time, AI agents will continue to improve; if consumers trust transactions made through the Amex network using agents, it will ultimately bring more transaction volume to the company.
