OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded publicly after a Molotov cocktail attack on his home and a critical New Yorker profile questioning his leadership.

Police said a suspect was arrested after allegedly throwing an explosive device at Altman’s San Francisco residence. No injuries were reported.

Altman said the incident happened shortly after the article was published, noting how public narratives around AI can escalate tensions.

In his blog response, Altman acknowledged past mistakes, including handling conflicts with OpenAI’s board in 2023, and said he is still learning while leading the company through rapid growth.

He also warned that competition in AI is creating a “ring of power” dynamic, where companies feel pressure to control the future of AGI.

Altman said progress should focus on distributing AI benefits broadly, rather than concentrating power in one organization.
