There's this wild family drama around the Musk household that's been bugging me for a while. Did Elon Musk grow up rich or not? Because depending on who you ask, you get completely different answers.
So his father Errol tells these incredible stories about having so much money they literally couldn't close their safe. Like, they'd stuff cash in and it would stick out, so they'd just pull it out and shove it in their pockets. According to Errol, back in the day they owned a share in an emerald mine in Zambia, and young Elon would just casually walk into places like Tiffany & Co. with emeralds in his pocket. One time he supposedly sold two for $2,000, only to see one of them show up in a ring marked at $24,000. It sounds almost too good to be true, right?
But here's where it gets interesting. Elon's version of events is basically the complete opposite. In a 2022 tweet, he pushed back hard on the whole emerald mine story, saying there's no actual evidence the mine ever existed. Nobody's ever seen it, no records, nothing. He acknowledged his father had a successful engineering business for a while, but he never inherited any real wealth from it. According to Elon, his childhood was actually pretty middle-income, maybe upper-middle class at best, and definitely not the money-overflowing-from-safes situation his father describes.
Here's the kicker though: Elon's been supporting his father financially for decades now. His brother Kimbal too. So even if Errol did have all that wealth back in the day, he's clearly not sitting on it anymore. The current reality is that Elon, now one of the richest people on the planet thanks to Tesla and SpaceX, is basically footing his father's bills. The support comes with conditions though - apparently tied to Errol staying out of trouble.
So did Elon Musk grow up rich? Based on his own account, not really. Based on his dad's stories, absolutely. Make of that what you will.
