Jack Ma Indirectly Linked to Major Ethereum Purchase
Alibaba founder Jack Ma has been indirectly connected to a significant crypto acquisition through Yunfeng Financial, a company in which he holds about 11.15% via Yunfeng Fund. According to BlockBeats, Yunfeng Financial recently purchased 10,000 ETH on the open market, at an estimated cost of $44 million. The holdings have been classified as part of the group’s “investment assets,” signaling a growing institutional shift toward digital asset allocation.
Chinese Companies and Crypto Exposure
This is not the first time a Chinese enterprise has entered the crypto market. In 2021, Hong Kong-listed tech firm Meitu acquired 15,000 ETH and 379 BTC through a subsidiary. Between late 2024 and early 2025, Meitu liquidated its crypto reserves, successfully doubling net profit. Jack Ma’s indirect stake in Ethereum now reflects another step toward mainstream adoption of crypto assets among major Chinese corporations.
Ethereum Market Outlook
Ethereum has been gaining momentum in recent months. As of early September 2025, ETH rose 25% from its mid-year low, briefly peaking at $4,956 before correcting to around $4,430. With a market capitalization of $533.2 billion, Ethereum remains the second-largest cryptocurrency, and multiple institutions expect further gains this year. Analysts point to ETF inflows, institutional accumulation, and improving regulatory clarity as key drivers.
At the same time, Bitcoin has shown weaker short-term momentum, leading some capital to rotate into Ethereum. This shift has fueled what some analysts call an “institutional bull market” for ETH, with expectations that Ethereum’s strength could eventually spill over into the broader altcoin sector.
Strategic Move or Risky Timing?
Jack Ma’s indirect investment raises the question of whether Yunfeng Financial is strategically positioning itself for Ethereum’s long-term growth or chasing near-peak valuations. Regardless, the move highlights a broader trend: institutional players in Asia are increasingly willing to treat digital assets not as speculation but as part of diversified corporate reserves.
