The 20th Training Base was established in 1957, originally as a missile testing base. Due to the demand for technological development, it was split into several independent bases in September 1975, among which the first testing department formed the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (i.e., the 20th Test Training Base), which is now responsible for aerospace launch missions.
In the 1950s, facing a severe international situation, the Central Committee of the Communist Party made a strategic decision to independently and autonomously develop the "Two Bombs and One Satellite." In 1957, the Ministry of National Defense officially approved Qian Xuesen's proposal to establish a missile testing range. In March 1958, the Central Committee and Chairman Mao approved the construction of China's first missile weapon testing range on the banks of the Weak Water River at the edge of the Badain Jaran Desert; on October 20, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center was officially established. Since its establishment, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center has witnessed many "firsts" in New China, including the first ground-to-ground missile made in China, China's first missile nuclear weapon test, China's first artificial Earth satellite, China's first recoverable satellite, China's first long-range carrier rocket, and China's first manned spacecraft, all successfully launched here. As of July 20, 2023, the center has completed a total of 200 space launch missions.
