On April 16, California Governor Gavson’s office issued a statement on Trump’s tariff measures, saying that the state would file a lawsuit seeking to stop Trump’s tariff policies. Major industries in California, from Silicon Valley to agriculture, are heavily dependent on global trade and could therefore lose billions of dollars to tariffs. “President Trump’s illegal tariffs are throwing chaos into California’s homes, businesses, and our economy — driving up prices and threatening jobs,” Newsom said in a statement. The lawsuit is Newsom’s most immediate legal challenge to Trump’s governing agenda since Trump became president again in January. Newsom’s argument is aimed at the U.S. International Economic Emergency Powers Act, under which Trump imposes tariffs without congressional approval. The Democrat argues that Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs under the law, in line with a similar lawsuit filed by a group of U.S. businesses on Monday. ( gold ten )
