OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s sister, Annie Altman, filed an amended civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of St. Louis, alleging that Sam Altman sexually abused her for a prolonged period between 1997 and 2006. Previously, a judge ruled that the independent sexual assault claims were time-barred in 2008, but allowed the case to be refiled under Missouri’s child sexual abuse statute. Sam Altman denies all allegations and countersues his sister for defamation.

The lawsuit has already been ongoing for several months, and it has now entered a new phase. Annie Altman filed an amended civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of St. Louis, accusing her brother, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, of sexually abusing her over a long period during her childhood.

Judge allows case to be refiled under child law

On March 20, U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone ruled that Annie Altman’s independent sexual abuse and sexual violence claims were time-barred as of 2008. But he also pointed out that Missouri’s child sexual abuse law allows claimants to sue over suspected abuse that occurred many years earlier, giving Annie Altman the opportunity to refile her case by April 3.

Annie Altman then filed an amended complaint in early April, recharging under Missouri’s child abuse statute.

Allegations and timeline

According to the complaint, Annie Altman alleges that between 1997 and 2006, Sam Altman sexually abused her multiple times at his home in Clayton, Missouri. She claims that the sexual abuse began when she was 3 years old and Sam Altman was 12.

Annie Altman previously posted related allegations on social media, including a video that mentioned that “a man who was almost a billionaire in tech” had abused her.

Sam Altman denies and countersues for defamation

Sam Altman fully denies all allegations and filed a defamation counterclaim with the court. In the court record, Sam Altman argues that his sister’s claims are fabricated and that they were made after family members refused her “unrestricted financial support” demands.

The Altman family also released a statement saying that Annie Altman has long been plagued by mental health issues, that family members have supported her financially for years, and that this lawsuit should be characterized as “extortion.”

In his March 20 ruling, Judge Zachary Bluestone also allowed Sam Altman’s defamation lawsuit to proceed.

The case is still pending. With both sides holding opposing views, for OpenAI—although this family dispute has no direct connection to the company’s operations—at a moment when OpenAI has just completed the $122 billion largest single-round financing in history and its valuation has surpassed $852 billion, having its CEO drawn into such legal controversy undoubtedly adds uncertainty to the company’s public relations image.
