Yuga Labs Reaches Settlement With Ryder Ripps Over BAYC Trademark Dispute

GateNews

Gate News message, on April 8, Yuga Labs reached a settlement with artist Ryder Ripps regarding their long-running trademark dispute, with legal controversies surrounding the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) nearing the end. Under the settlement agreement, Ripps and its partners will be barred from continuing to use Yuga Labs’ related images and trademarks; specific terms have not been fully disclosed yet. The case began in 2022, when Ripps launched a counterfeit NFT series, RR/BAYC, using the same ape imagery as BAYC, and called it “expressive appropriation art.” Yuga Labs then filed a lawsuit for trademark infringement. In 2023, a U.S. court ruled that the counterfeit project constituted trademark infringement and ordered approximately $9 million in damages. After that, the appeals court partially overturned the decision and required a retrial, putting the case into a prolonged back-and-forth phase.
