Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi announced on April 15 that the Panamanian capital will accept cryptocurrencies to pay taxes and municipal fees, including bus tickets and permits, joining a growing number of jurisdictions around the world that have voted to accept such payments.
Mizrachi announced on the X platform that Panama City will begin accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, Circle’s USDC, and Tether’s USDT stablecoins as payment methods once the crypto-to-fiat payment track is established.
Mizrachi said previous administrations had tried to push through similar legislation, but failed to go beyond the requirement for local governments to accept dollar-denominated funding.
