The Spar supermarket has officially appeared on the BTC Map platform, which tracks organizations around the world that accept bitcoin as payment. DFX Swiss reported that the store chain became one of the first supermarkets in Switzerland to accept cryptocurrency payments thanks to the OpenCryptoPay solution. Customers can pay with bitcoins through the Lightning Network by scanning the QR code at the checkout.
If the pilot project in Zug proves successful, Spar may begin accepting bitcoins in other stores. The company has 13,900 supermarkets in 48 countries, serving 14.7 million customers daily. Spar has long been experimenting with accepting payments in bitcoins. As far back as 2014, the retailer started accepting bitcoins in the Netherlands as part of the Bitcoincity initiative.
In April 2023, one of the largest supermarket chains in South Africa, Pick’n’Pay, provided customers with the opportunity to make purchases using bitcoins through the Lightning Network at all of its 1600 locations.
Large American chains Whole Foods and Starbucks have also implemented cryptocurrency payments through third-party applications that convert cryptocurrency to fiat.
