Robert Rubin, the former Treasury Secretary and ex-Goldman Sachs chairman, just dropped a warning worth paying attention to. His message? Don't forget what happened during the October 1987 Black Monday crash.

For those who weren't around back then, Black Monday saw the Dow Jones plummet 22.6% in a single day—the largest one-day percentage decline in stock market history. It was brutal, swift, and caught most investors completely off guard.

Rubin's bringing this up now isn't random. Markets have been riding high, valuations are stretched in certain sectors, and complacency tends to creep in during extended bull runs. His point seems clear: history has a way of repeating itself when people least expect it.

What made 1987 particularly nasty was the combination of programmed trading, portfolio insurance strategies gone wrong, and a lack of circuit breakers that exist today. While market structure has evolved since then, the underlying psychology—fear, panic, herd behavior—remains unchanged.

Whether you're heavily positioned in crypto, equities, or both, veterans like Rubin reminding us of past crashes serves as a reality check. Nobody's saying a meltdown is imminent, but ignoring historical precedent? That's how portfolios get wrecked.

Here we go again... How many times has the story from '87 been told? What’s meant to happen will still happen. --- Rubin's got it right, but no one listens. --- Damn, now leverage is everywhere, even crazier than '87. --- Every day it’s black swans, but in the end it’s still greed that kills. --- History never repeats exactly, but human nature never changes—that’s the real tragedy. --- I just want to know when the drop starts, stop trying to hypnotize me, okay? --- Reminds me of last year’s wave—if you don’t have the guts, just don’t play. --- No wonder I got liquidated three times... Turns out it’s all psychology. --- The big shots give their warnings and bail, while we’re still stuck inside waiting for doom. --- Staying alert is right, but you can’t just sit in cash forever waiting to die, can you? --- I’m still learning the lesson from '87, damn it.

Bringing up stuff from '87, is the market about to change? --- Rubin is still saying the same things, but this time the market does feel a bit tense. --- Sounds nice, but why didn't you warn us earlier? --- Algorithmic trading is even crazier now, totally out of control. --- It's true that after such a long rally, we should sound the alarm, but there are always more people calling the bottom than the top. --- The Black Monday story gets told every time, yet people just can't remember. --- History repeating itself? The crypto market has been way more volatile than traditional finance these years, can't really withstand it. --- Yet another bearish old-timer. I just want to know what he's actually doing. --- You really can't guard against systemic risk. Is the circuit breaker mechanism enough? --- There's plenty of liquidity now, it's different. --- Just listen and take it in, but don't actually sell everything and run—if you do, you'll regret it.

The same playbook from Black Monday in 1987🔄 is still being used now. Mindset is the biggest risk.

Bringing up things from '87, it seems the guy really thinks risk is coming. It's the same old "history repeats itself" narrative, getting a bit annoying to hear. But then again... it is a wake-up call. Now with program trading being ten times more prevalent, what do you think will happen?
