IMF warns: Stablecoins may accelerate "dollarization" in weaker countries, challenging central bank control

Abstract generation in progress

[BlockBeats] On December 5, the International Monetary Fund issued a warning: stablecoins could make things worse for countries whose monetary systems are already unstable.

Their reasoning goes like this—USD-pegged stablecoins are becoming increasingly easy to use, making cross-border transfers faster and more convenient. In regions with unstable economies, people and businesses might stop using their local currencies and start using dollar stablecoins directly. This would make it even harder for central banks to control capital flows.

Simply put, the convenience of stablecoins is challenging traditional monetary sovereignty. For already fragile economies, this trend toward “dollarization” could come faster and more forcefully.

Haha, the IMF is fearmongering again, acting like stablecoins are some kind of monstrous threat. Honestly, those central banks have long since lost control of their own national currencies. Do they really think blaming stablecoins will help them sleep better at night? Dollarization is just people voting with their feet. If your currency sucks, who would want to hold onto it? This is nothing new—Venezuela has been living like this for ages. Instead of blaming stablecoins, maybe they should reflect on why their economies are so weak. What’s interesting is that the IMF is only now issuing a warning—where were they before? In my opinion, widespread adoption of stablecoins is just a matter of time, and if central banks can’t adapt, they’ll be out of the game. Their power is being threatened, that’s why these warnings are coming so fast.

The IMF is worrying unnecessarily again. Stablecoins are indeed convenient but not that scary. Countries with weak currencies should embrace the US dollar in the first place.

USD stablecoins are indeed eroding the monetary sovereignty of various countries, but isn't this also a result of market choice?

Stablecoins are just a big financial move by the US empire. Central banks of weaker countries have long lost any real say.
