Are Malaysians of Chinese descent second-class citizens?
First, let me state the conclusion: yes. This is not just my opinion; it's what the local Chinese community themselves say. Whether it’s studying, employment, or government policies, they tend to favor Malays. Chinese people, unless they are particularly outstanding, can only get into good schools and good positions. Taxi🚕 drivers are mostly Chinese or Indian. Talking to them, I learned they are third-generation immigrants. Elderly people generally have no pension and still have to work as Grab drivers to make a living. There are many Indians in Malaysia, but their overall quality is quite high. They are also third-generation immigrants. They identify themselves as Malays, not Indians. Malaysian indigenous people, because they follow Islam, can legally have three wives. But Chinese people can only have one wife. Talking to Chinese drivers, I feel that they are all quite resentful. Whenever the topic of the government comes up, they all feel it’s unfair.
