OpenAI has confirmed ambitious plans to enter the consumer hardware segment. OpenAI Policy Director, Chris Lehane, stated that the company aims to launch its first hardware in the second half of 2026, marking a significant expansion of their AI business strategy.

OpenAI AI Hardware Strategy

After acquiring Jony Ive’s design studio, the company led by Sam Altman began formulating a concrete vision for physical AI products. The planned hardware will adopt a minimalist approach with a screenless design, reflecting an intuitive and user-friendly interface philosophy. This product is designed to provide a natural AI interaction experience for everyday consumers.

Development Phase and Target Market

Lehane clarified that although the launch schedule is set for the end of 2026, a specific sales availability date is still in the final stages. This approach allows OpenAI to maintain flexibility in product development while ensuring the hardware quality meets the high standards expected from a leading technology brand.

This strategic move reflects OpenAI’s commitment to delivering innovative hardware solutions that complement their AI ecosystem, while also opening new revenue streams beyond software and API services.
