The tokenomics reforms of Axie Infinity revolutionize the market and neutralize game farms

By the end of January 2026, the Axie Infinity ecosystem has experienced a significant movement in its market. The native tokens AXS and SLP have registered notable changes following the decisive reforms driven by Sky Mavis. These measures aim to completely transform the dynamics of automated farming that have dominated the project for years, with structural changes that allow rebalancing the market and the game’s economic model.

The impact on numbers: how the market responds to the reforms

According to data updated as of January 30, both assets’ behavior reflects the implemented strategic shift. AXS has appreciated by 157.54% in the last 30 days, reaching a market capitalization of $358.87 million. Meanwhile, SLP has adjusted with a 7.04% increase during the same period, placing its market value at $29.68 million. These movements reveal how the market absorbs the deep structural transformations of the ecosystem following the developers’ intervention.

The offensive against farms: elimination of issuance in Origins

The core of the reforms lies in the elimination of a mechanism that fueled mass cultivation farms. Starting January 7, Sky Mavis completely halted the issuance of SLP in the Origins mode, interrupting the “grow and sell” cycle that had turned the game into an efficient but unsustainable farm market. This decision has drastically reduced inflationary pressure on SLP, decreasing the daily supply by more than 30%. The impact is direct: without new issuance, bots and farm operators lose their main source of income, transforming the game’s competitive landscape.

bAXS: the new reward model that penalizes speculators

Complementing this strategy, Sky Mavis introduced bAXS (Linked AXS), a token radically different from the previous reward system. Unlike traditional AXS, which could be freely traded, bAXS is non-transferable and remains linked to specific player accounts. Its utility is limited to in-game consumption, staking, and governance rights. The real novelty lies in the progressive fee system: high-reputation players face lower commissions when selling, while others see higher tariffs. This design explicitly penalizes short-term operators and bots, rewarding only genuine players committed to the ecosystem.

A historic inflection point towards sustainability

These changes represent the most aggressive revision of Axie Infinity’s economic model since its explosion in 2021. Co-founder Jihoz has indicated that 2026 will involve “taking greater risks,” including new updates such as the Beta of the Legacy of Atia MMO to rejuvenate player interest. The strategy is clear: transform the speculative farming market into a sustainable ecosystem where genuine player engagement is the cornerstone. For investors, these reforms signal a transition from an extraction model to one focused on building long-term value in the blockchain gaming sector.
