Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently stated that the company will “definitely” participate in the new round of funding currently underway for OpenAI, but the investment amount is “unlikely to reach or approach” $100 billion.

On Saturday (January 31), Jensen Huang said in an interview, “We will definitely participate in the next round of funding because it is a very good investment. We are very happy to do so.”

Huang mentioned that OpenAI is one of the most influential companies of our time, doing excellent work, and he also enjoys working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Huang stated that Nvidia has not yet invested in OpenAI, mainly because the latter is in the process of a new round of financing. He also pointed out that the company will definitely participate in OpenAI’s ongoing funding.

Huang did not disclose the specific investment amount but added that this investment is very likely to become “the largest investment we have ever made.”

This statement from Huang was mainly in response to a piece of news on Friday (January 30), which reported that negotiations for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI had broken down, potentially causing a rift between the two companies.

Last September, Nvidia signed a letter of intent with OpenAI to gradually invest up to $100 billion for building new data centers and other AI infrastructure, but OpenAI was to adopt Nvidia’s hardware components.

The report said that the reason for the stalled negotiations was concerns expressed by some internal Nvidia personnel. It mentioned that both sides are re-evaluating their partnership, with one possibility being that Nvidia invests several billion dollars in OpenAI’s current funding round.

In response, Nvidia stated on Friday, “Over the past 10 years, we have been OpenAI’s preferred partner. We look forward to continuing our collaboration.” However, the company did not disclose specific progress in the negotiations.

The goal of OpenAI’s current funding round is to raise up to $100 billion. On Thursday, there were reports that Amazon is also in talks to invest up to $50 billion and expand its cooperation to provide computing power services to this AI startup.

Nvidia has previously made several notable AI investments. Earlier this week, the company announced plans to invest an additional $2 billion in CoreWeave, a cloud computing service provider and its customer.

However, such “circular transactions” (where a company invests in its customer, and the customer then purchases its products) have raised concerns about the sustainability of the AI boom. Huang downplayed these criticisms.

Regarding the CoreWeave deal, he said such investments account for only a small part of the company’s overall financing needs, “saying this is a circular transaction — that’s a ridiculous claim.”
