From a Buddhist perspective: Holding negative thoughts about others is "giving your heart to external things," and the cost of negative thoughts is entirely borne by you. Essentially, it is using your own energy to buy into others' shortcomings, which is a repeated self-harm. From any rational system, this is a terrible transaction.
