Wing is accelerating the expansion of drone delivery services across the United States – 150 new locations at Walmart
Delivery technology using drones reaches a new stage of commercialization. Wing, a subsidiary of Google (Alphabet), along with Walmart, has signed an agreement to significantly expand the distribution network through unmanned aerial vehicles. This expansion of their existing partnership indicates a growing consumer appetite for such logistics services and Wing’s ability to scale operations on a large scale.
How Wing Dominates the Drone Delivery Sector
Heather Rivera, the new Business Director at Wing, highlights the dynamic growth of the business. In a detailed statement to industry portals, she explained that the collaboration will be implemented in phases throughout the year until 2027. The initial locations will serve additional cities beyond the current coverage of Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta.
It is worth noting that Wing’s management closely monitors user behavior. The top quartile of customers use the service up to three times a week — a sign of high engagement. The available product catalog includes groceries such as eggs, ground beef, fresh vegetables (tomatoes, avocados), citrus fruits, and a variety of snacks (Takis, Lunchables). This diversity demonstrates how Wing has practically brought e-commerce into the world of physical, motorized deliveries.
Expansion to 150 Stores – An Ambitious Plan
The latest announcement concerns the introduction of drone deliveries to 150 additional Walmart locations. This is a significant leap from the current coverage. The company previously revealed plans in June 2025 to enter markets such as Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte. Service in Houston already launched in mid-January, indicating that the implementation schedule is on track.
Once the entire project is completed, Wing will serve over 270 Walmart stores across the United States. Geographically, this will include metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. According to estimates, this reach will allow access to about 10 percent of the U.S. population — a substantial market share for this new delivery medium.
Technological Significance and Competitive Position
The collaboration began in 2023, when both companies conducted a pilot program involving just two sites in the Dallas area, serving around 60,000 households. Since then, the service has rapidly expanded — first to 18 supermarkets in Dallas-Fort Worth, then to locations in Atlanta.
Wing is continuously developing its technical capabilities. Recently, the first commercial flights were conducted using a larger drone capable of transporting loads up to five pounds. This marks a breakthrough in the delivery segment — drones can now carry more diverse products and larger orders, increasing operational profitability.
Although Wing also partners with DoorDash, Walmart remains its primary commercial partner and growth driver.
Scaling Strategy: Key to Long-Term Success
Rivera emphasized that her role focuses on driving the company’s growth. “This is my mission here, and I am enthusiastically committed to it,” she said, noting that increasing the number of deliveries is central to Wing’s business model.
Wing’s management is considering various scaling strategies. An example is the simultaneous launch of a group of stores in a given area — a method previously used in Atlanta, where six sites were launched concurrently. This approach allows for optimal utilization of infrastructure and operational resources.
While Rivera did not disclose details about the profitability of current operations, she clearly stated that expanding to as many locations and markets as possible is essential for Wing’s long-term market positioning. This decisive step further consolidates Wing’s position — originally a Google X research project — as a leader in the commercial drone delivery industry.
