Tropical Cyclone Nuri's Trough to Bring Heavy Rains Across Eastern Philippines
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued weather advisories regarding the impact of the trough associated with tropical cyclone Nuri and the prevailing northeast monsoon system. Although the tropical cyclone itself will not directly enter Philippine territory, its atmospheric effects are expected to influence weather patterns across multiple regions in the coming days.
Tropical Cyclone Nuri Tracking Away from Philippines
As of the latest monitoring update, tropical cyclone Nuri was positioned approximately 1,220 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, moving in a southeastward direction at 10 kilometers per hour. The system maintains maximum sustained winds of 65 kph with gusts reaching up to 80 kph. PAGASA clarified that while the tropical cyclone will remain outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), its extension—particularly the trough of associated clouds—will continue to influence local weather conditions.
Eastern Mindanao Braces for Heaviest Rainfall
The trough extension from tropical cyclone Nuri is projected to deliver the most significant precipitation impacts to eastern Mindanao over the next 24 hours. “The trough or extension of the storm’s cloud band will bring cloudiness and rainfall over the eastern section of Mindanao,” explained PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez. Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental are anticipated to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.
Northeast Monsoon Adds to Wet Weather Pattern
Beyond the tropical cyclone’s indirect effects, the northeast monsoon system—locally referred to as “amihan”—is expected to enhance the overall wet weather pattern across Luzon and the Visayas. However, PAGASA noted that this seasonal wind system should produce only limited impacts in these regions. Northern areas including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora may see cloudy conditions with light precipitation. Metro Manila, the broader Luzon region, and the Visayas are likely to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.
The rest of Mindanao, apart from the eastern section affected by the tropical cyclone’s trough, may encounter partly cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms resulting from localized atmospheric instability.
Safety Warnings Issued for Flood-Prone Areas
PAGASA has cautioned residents in vulnerable areas about the potential for severe weather hazards. Moderate to heavy rainfall associated with the tropical cyclone’s trough extension could trigger flash floods and landslides in susceptible regions. Similarly, severe thunderstorms developing across other parts of the country pose additional flood and landslide risks. Residents are advised to remain alert and take appropriate precautions during the forecast period.
