Ethereum Scaling Vision According to Buterin's Plan: From Glamsterdam to the Future with Multidimensional Gas

Abstract generation in progress

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has presented a comprehensive network development strategy, dividing it into two critical phases. According to Buterin, this separation will enable Ethereum to achieve significant performance improvements while maintaining security and decentralization.

Upcoming Improvements: What the Glamsterdam Update Will Bring

Buterin’s short-term strategy focuses on the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, which will introduce several critical optimizations. Using access lists at the block level will speed up transaction validation, while the ePBS mechanism will give validators more time to verify blocks before finalization.

A gas price adjustment system based on actual execution time will ensure a fairer distribution of computational resources. Additionally, a reservoir system will be implemented to ensure EVM compatibility, guaranteeing proper operation of nested subroutine calls when interacting with gas operations.

Revolution in Pricing: Multidimensional Gas as a Key to Scaling

The key innovation in the short term is the introduction of multidimensional gas, which will differentiate resource consumption for various operation types. This solution addresses one of the main issues in the state — its uncontrolled bloat, which burdens validators.

With the Glamsterdam update, state creation costs will be separated from the standard gas limit. This means contract deployment operations can use more resources without conflicting with other transactions. Gradually, Ethereum will transition to a comprehensive multidimensional gas pricing system, ensuring long-term economic sustainability of the network while maintaining protocol flexibility.

Long-Term Vision: ZK-EVM and Blob Capacity Expansion

Buterin’s long-term strategy emphasizes two main technologies. First, expanding the use of ZK-EVM, which will enable complex computations to be performed off-chain with cryptographic proof of correctness.

Second, data availability scaling will reach fundamentally new levels thanks to PeerDAS technology. Iterative improvements will allow blobs to achieve a throughput of 8 MB/s, enabling direct verification of block data without the need to download the entire information. This will drastically lower entry barriers for network participants.

Significance for the Ecosystem

Buterin’s proposed development path represents a balanced approach to scaling, combining immediate performance improvements with long-term architectural transformation. The introduction of multidimensional gas and reduced storage requirements will address accumulated efficiency issues, while investments in ZK-EVM and PeerDAS will prepare Ethereum for the next generation of scalable applications.
