Just went down a rabbit hole on the most expensive NFTs ever sold and honestly some of these prices are wild. Like, Pak's Merge for $91.8 million? That's insane. The thing is, it wasn't even owned by one person - 28k+ collectors bought pieces of it. Each chunk was like $575. Pretty clever sales model actually.
Beeple's been killing it too. His Everydays piece went for $69M back in 2021, and get this - it started at just $100 in the auction. But because he's got such a huge following, the bidding went absolutely crazy. 5,000 days of daily art compiled into one NFT. That's dedication.
Then there's this Clock NFT that Pak made with Julian Assange - $52.7M. It's literally a timer counting his days in prison, updates every day. Wild that an NFT became a political statement like that.
Obviously CryptoPunks show up everywhere on these expensive NFT lists. Those alien punks especially. #5822 sold for $23M, #7523 for $11.75M. They're from 2017 so they've got that OG credibility. One of them even has a medical mask on, which made it rare.
What's interesting is the most expensive NFTs aren't always just about the art - it's the story, the artist's reputation, and sometimes the cultural moment. Beeple's Crossroad was literally about the 2020 election and it sold for $6.6M. The market's definitely cooled since then but these pieces are still considered milestones in digital art history. Makes you wonder what'll break these records next.
