  • PeerDAS brings live data availability sampling to Ethereum, supporting higher throughput without sacrificing decentralization.

  • ZK-EVMs reached alpha production performance, setting the path toward ZK-based block validation from 2027 onward.

  • Erasure coding and sampling let light clients verify blocks, fixing data withholding risks in sharded Ethereum systems.

Ethereum entered a new technical phase after PeerDAS went live on mainnet and ZK-EVMs reached alpha performance, according to Vitalik Buterin. He shared the update publicly in 2025, reflecting on a decade of development work. The changes involve Ethereum’s core network design, data handling and block validation structure.

Ethereum Moves Beyond Earlier Network Limits

As per Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum now combines decentralization, consensus, and high bandwidth within one network. He compared this shift to earlier peer-to-peer systems. BitTorrent delivered scale without consensus, while Bitcoin achieved consensus with limited throughput.

However, Ethereum with PeerDAS achieves data availability sampling on mainnet today. In parallel, ZK-EVMs now deliver production-quality performance, with safety work still ongoing. Buterin said this combination marks a functional resolution of the blockchain trilemma through live code.

He added that ZK-EVM usage will expand gradually. Only small network portions will rely on them initially. Still, the groundwork already supports higher capacity without centralization.

Why Data Availability Matters for Ethereum

Buterin explained that data availability remains critical for light clients and sharded systems. Fraud proofs allow invalid blocks to be challenged. However, fraud proofs fail when block producers withhold data.

If data remains unavailable, validators cannot compute full state transitions. This blocks further interaction with affected data segments. According to Buterin, the network cannot reliably assign blame in such cases.

To address this, Ethereum uses data availability sampling with erasure coding. Blocks expand into larger encoded datasets. Light clients then sample random chunks and verify Merkle proofs. If most data remains accessible, clients gain high confidence in availability.

Erasure Codes and Ethereum’s Scaling Roadmap

Buterin detailed how erasure codes protect against partial data withholding. Any subset of encoded chunks can reconstruct original data. This prevents small data gaps from breaking verification.

He also described multidimensional erasure coding. This approach reduces computation costs and fraud proof sizes. Blocks commit to row and column Merkle roots, enabling cross-checks for consistency.

Looking ahead, Buterin outlined a staged rollout. In 2026, Ethereum plans gas limit increases without full ZK reliance. Between 2026 and 2028, repricing and structural changes follow. From 2027 onward, ZK-EVMs become the primary validation method.

He also highlighted distributed block building. The goal involves reducing centralized control over transaction inclusion while improving geographic fairness across the network.
