US media: Iranian Parliament Speaker threatens to cut off shipping through the Strait of Mandeb
Golden Finance reported that on April 5, according to a report on the website of NBC News on April 3, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Qalibaf apparently vowed to block commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Mandeb, a critical gateway in the Red Sea.
According to the report, Qalibaf posted on the social platform X, saying: “How many shares of oil, liquefied natural gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer shipments globally have to transit through the Strait of Mandeb?” He then wrote: “Which countries and companies’ cargoes account for the highest share of the volume transported through that strait?”
In recent years, ships that have passed through the area have repeatedly been attacked by the Yemeni Houthi militant group allied with the Iranian regime. The threat to the Strait of Mandeb was issued at a time when Iran has already largely cut off shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. A blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has thrown the global economy into chaos.
